Chairman of Council for 2008 to 2009

Harlow Council has a Chairman rather than a Mayor. The Chairman is elected by Councillors  at the Annual Full Council meeting each year and serves for a term of one year.  The Chairman is the First Citizen of the District.

The Chairman for Harlow Council for 2008/2009 is Councillor Tony Hall (Conservative - Church Langley).

Tony was born in 1944 and grew up in Southend.  In 1964 he joined the Southend Borough Police, where he furthered his passion for riding motorcycles and driving cars.

In 1969 Southend Police amalgamated with Essex and Tony was posted to Harlow.  By then Tony was a family man and moved to Harlow with his wife and two sons, where both his sons went to school. His eldest son studied medicine and science at Kings Medical College, Southampton and Imperial College, obtaining a BSC and PhD in Biochemistry and now lives in Canterbury, while his younger son works for a major bank designing and installing networking systems and lives in Harlow.

Tony spent many years literally rebuilding his house in Kingsdon Lane, Harlow where he lives with his wife Maureen whom he married in 2008.

Tony's police career was varied.  Apart from a three year spell as a detective he spent most of his 32 years service in uniform.  During his career he worked at Ongar, Epping, Harlow, the Traffic Department and Police Headquarters in Chelmsford.  Between 1974 and 1977 he studied for a law degree.  During his last posting to Harlow he became Inspector with responsibility for beat policing and he was able to instigate what was then seen as a groundbreaking scheme to increase the police presence on Harlow streets.

Since retirement from the Police Tony had hoped to relax and enjoy his other hobbies, like his 'classic' Triumph car, following the ups and downs of Southend Utd FC, the England cricket team, DIY and gardening.  Instead he is busier than ever.

Chairman's Charity

It is  part of the Chairman's duty to help good causes that benefit residents of the district and during his tenure of office a charity is supported.  Tony's charity for 2008/2009 is Child Victims Of Crime (CVOC)   " www.cvoc.org.uk"
