About Cafe Youth:

On Friday 28th March 2008, Harlow's Cafe Youth opened its doors. Over 100 young people visited the new café during the first weekend of its opening.  The café is for young people aged 11 – 17.

There are 3 zones:

  • Play zone - here you can play pool or Wii
  • Chill zone - a sofa area to meet your friends and listen to music
  • Eat zone - where you can buy affordable, healthy and popular snacks including Fairtrade products. The café supports the town’s Fairtrade status and displays the Fairtrade stickers.

The café won the Regional Monitor Award for Excellence for involving young people in the planning and designing.

Harlow Youth Councillors first approached Harlow Council with their youth café idea in 2004; it took four years for the dream to become a reality. They attended council meetings, conducted two surveys and researched the need for a town centre café for the under 18’s. The youth councillors worked closely with Harlow Council and employed a part time project manager to get the project moving; they found a venue, fund raised and got support from numerous community groups and local businesses to refurbish the shop at 21 Westgate.

The cafe has National Lottery funding for three years, which ceases in March 2011.  Sponsors and funders of the cafe have included:
