Enviro-Crime
Overview
Crimes affecting the environment are often collectively described
as Enviro-Crimes. These include anti-social acts such as throwing a
cigarette butt onto the ground, right up to larger environmental
crimes such as fly-tipping industrial waste which can attract fines
of up to £50,000 and/or 12 months in prison.
All have the common definition that they spoil the local
environment for the communities that live in them. How we feel
about the area in which we live can have a significant effect on
perceptions of safety, and affect our health. An area plastered
with graffiti and suffering from vandalism and disrepair, can often
get caught in a downward spiral which leads to a loss of ownership
by the community.
The Council is committed to tackling enviro-crime, and
taking a zero tolerance approach to tackle offenders, co-ordinated
by the Council's Community Safety team. On the preventative side, a
programme of initiatives is also in place to educate people (in
particular children) to change their behaviour for the long
term.
In this section, there is an explanation as to what the
enviro-crimes are, and what is being done to tackle them.
All of the crimes in this section can be reported by You.
