After School Clubs and Holiday Care Schemes - a guide

  • Staff: Staff must have experience working with children and hold a relevant qualification.
 
  • Sessions: After School Schemes usually open from 3.00pm-6pm. Children are taken from school and brought to the scheme by a staff member. Holiday Schemes generally open from 8.30am-6pm. Children are taken to and collected from the scheme by a parent or carer. Most schemes take children all day but some offer half-day sessions.
 
  • Scheme size: There must not be more than 30 children in one room and there must be one adult for every 8 children.
 
  • The Children Act applies for facilities taking children under 8 years.
 
  • Meals: Children will need a packed lunch if attending a Holiday Scheme all day. Other schemes offer children a snack during sessions.
 
  • Age range: Children can attend from 5 to 11 years.
 
  • Admissions: To apply for a place, contact the individual scheme.
 
  • Cost: Charges may vary from scheme to scheme.
