Harlow has a range of health and welfare facilities with a
network of doctor and dental surgeries in each neighbourhood, which
meet the day-to-day healthcare needs of the community. There are
centres providing care for the elderly, people with learning
disabilities and other vulnerable members of the community.
There are many support and voluntary groups providing
specialist needs and offering advice. Harlow also boasts a NHS
Walk-In Centre based near the hospital. Additionally, an NHS
Walk-in Centre nurse is also available at the Young Peoples’
Information Centre at Occasio House offering health advice for
13-25 year olds.
NHS Walk-In Centre
The Walk-In Centre offers health advice and deals with minor
emergencies such as cuts, burns and minor injuries. It is open 7
days a week 7am-10pm Monday to Friday and 9am-10pm Saturday and
Sunday. ‘Earlybird’ bloodtests are available Monday to Friday 7am -
9am. No appointment is necessary at the Walk-In Centre.

Princess Alexandra Hospital

An expanding general hospital currently undergoing a major
refurbishment and rebuilding programme. Facilities include an
Accident & Emergency Department that includes an Emergency
Medical Unit (EMU); a maternity unit and a large day stay unit. In
summer 2004, a new £16 million wing will open incorporating three
new wards, two operating theatres and a pre-assessment
centre.
A Cardiac Catheter Lab will also open in Spring 2004 meaning
that the majority of West Essex residents will no longer have to
travel into London for this service.
