Get a £50 Council Tax rebate by insulating your home
To help reduce the town’s carbon footprint
Harlow Council has teamed up with British Gas to offer a £50
Council Tax rebate to residents that pay to insulate their loft and
walls.
Up to 35% of heat is lost through walls and
25% through the roof of a property. By insulating homes residents
can save money and help prevent the damaging effects of climate
change.
The scheme is for homeowners and private
tenants and was officially launched last Wednesday (5 June) by the
Council’s Joint Leaders Tony Durcan and Chris Millington and Chief
Executive Malcolm Morley during the Council’s Environment
Week. On the same day the Council also started to hand out
free low energy low bulbs provided by British Gas to residents.
Householders will need to pay British Gas for
the insulation, which will be at a discounted cost, but will get a
£50 Council Tax rebate. Householders qualifying for certain
benefits will receive free insulation but will not receive the
council tax rebate. In the long term householders will save money
through reduced energy loss.
Councillor Tony Durcan, Joint Council Leader,
said: “As a town we need to do more to reduce carbon emissions.
This scheme is the perfect way householders can reduce energy loss,
save money and lower their carbon footprint.”
Councillor Chris Millington, Joint Council
Leader, said: “Although residents may have to pay for the
insulation the cost is being greatly discounted by British Gas at
present. The Council will also offer eligible residents £50 back on
their council tax. By having good insulation residents can keep
warm in the winter and cool in the summer and help reduce climate
change.”
