Heartbeat Harlow
Environmental Health Services together with Harlow Primary Care
Trust, have run a successful Award scheme for caterers in
Harlow.
The Heartbeat Harlow Award is a local Award for catering
establishments in Harlow. It is based on nationally
recognised criteria. The Award is given to caterers who are
committed to offering greater choice to customers through the
provision of a healthy environment and healthier food
choices. These are two important factors in helping people
reduce their risk of coronary heart disease.
The Heartbeat Harlow Award encourages caterers to take an
active role in the prevention of coronary heart disease and to
adopt good practices in food hygiene.
All types of catering establishments are eligible to apply for
Heartbeat Harlow – workplaces, school or hospital canteens,
sandwich bars, pubs, hotels, restaurants and take-away
outlets.
To qualify for the Award the catering establishment has to
fulfil three criteria:
1. High standards of food hygiene
2. The provision of smoke free eating areas
3. The provision of healthier food choice
Environmental Health Officers and the Community Dietitian
assess these criteria.
The changes coming about with Smokefree Workplaces legislation
and the recent reorganisation of the Primary Care Trust, now
covering West Essex, mean that we will be considering
changes to carry on the good work that has gone into the
scheme so far.
If you would like to apply for the Heartbeat Harlow Award, or
wish to nominate a caterer you feel deserves the Award, or would
just like further information about the Award, please contact
Environmental Health Services on 01279 446111.
