Gaming Permits

The Act introduces a range of permits for gambling which are granted by Licensing Authorities.  Permits are required when premises provide a gambling facility but either the stakes and prizes are very low or gambling is not the main function of the premises.  The permits regulate gambling and the use of gaming machines in a specific premises.

 

Holders of alcohol-licensed premises gaming machine permits and club permits will require to comply with Codes of Practice, drawn up by the Gambling Commission, on the location and operation of machines.

 

Licensing Authorities are responsible for issuing the following types of permits:

 

  • Family Entertainment Centre Gaming Machine Permit
  • Club Gaming Permit and Club Machine Permit
  • Alcohol-Licensed Premises Gaming Machine Permit
  • Prize Gaming Permit

 

In addition, Licensing Authorites will be responsible for receiving, from holders of alcohol-licensed premises (under the 2003 Act), notifications that they intend to exercise their automatic entitlement to two gaming machines in their premise.

Gaming Machines

The Gambling Act 2005 introduces new classes of gaming machines that may be operated under a permit, as shown in figure 1 below.
