Signs & Lines
Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions 2002.
All traffic signs and road markings must be in accordance with
the Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions 2002.
This is a Statutory Instrument. The Highway Authority (Essex
County Council) has a duty to maintain signs and lines on the
Public Highway.
Traffic Signs Manual
The Traffic Signs Manual is an eight Chapter publication,
published on behalf of the Department for Transport. This is
the Traffic Engineers bible for Sign design.
Know Your Traffic Signs
All drivers should be familiar with this publication. The
following PDF can be downloaded for reference (PDF) and hard copies
can easily be obtained from a good bookshop or stationers. It
sets out in detail the signing and lining requirements for
different parking situations. It is recommended that all
drivers keep a copy in their car for reference.
Highway Code
All drivers must be familiar with the current version of the
Highway Code. It sets out in general terms what is considered
to be good and poor parking practice. Again it is recommended
that all drivers keep a copy in their car for reference.
Harlow Good Parking Guide
Harlow Council has developed a Good Parking Guide. Whilst
many drivers know that they should not have parked in a certain
location, others park in locations not realising that they have
parked in contravention. This is often caused by drivers not
keeping themselves up to date with the Highway Code and Know Your
Traffic Signs. Harlow Council has therefore produced a simple
Good Parking Guide which sets out some of the more common mistakes
that drivers make, when parking in Harlow. The Guide is in
PDF form and a hard copy can be downloaded for keeping in the
car.
