Allotment Scheme
If you enjoy gardening, and whether you live in a flat or have a
small garden, the idea of having an allotment may appeal to you. In
Harlow there are 35 allotment sites and there is almost certainly
one near to where you live.
Some of the allotment sites are managed by the Harlow
Allotment Association and are self managed by the plotholders
themselves. Those who have an allotment say it gives them a great
opportunity to grow there own flowers and vegetables and enjoy
being out in the fresh air. All allotment sites have water provided
and are enclosed by secure hedges and fences.
If you are thinking about taking on an allotment it is still
not too late for growing salad vegetables providing you can start
straight away with preparing your plot. For many plotholders having
an allotment gives the opportunity to grow fresh fruit, vegetables
and flowers. The cost of doing so will also help reduce your
grocery bill. Fresh produce grown in season has a flavour which
brings its own rewards.
The cost of renting a plot is typically about £18.00 for the
whole year depending upon the size of the plot, with concessions
given for pensioners or those on benefit. Also available are raised
plots on a few sites for those people with back problems or use a
wheel chair.
