Harlow Youth Council
Young Essex Assembly (Harlow)
Elections 1 – 6 December 2008
Declarations 10 December 2008

Harlow Youth Council is a locally elected group of 13 – 19 year olds who live in Harlow.  The Young Essex Assembly is a county-wide "youth council" with 75 members, which mirrors the adult county council.

24 young people stood as candidates for Harlow Youth Council and 4 young people stood as candidates to represent Harlow in  the Young Essex Assembly.  During Hustings Day, 28th October 2008, the young people received information and training on being a youth councillor and had their official photographs taken.

The candidates wrote their manifesto statements to let young people in Harlow know about the issues they are interested in and commited to them by reading them aloud to the other attendees.  The candidates statements can be viewed here:

The results will be formally announced on Wednesday 10th December 2008.

Voting for the elections is open to young people aged 11-19 living in Harlow.  Ballot boxes will be placed in all secondary schools, Harlow College, The One Stop Shop,  Harlow Civic Centre, youth centres and libraries.

The newly elected youth councillors will take up office on 31st January 2009 to make a 24-strong Harlow Youth Council.  The elected Young Essex Assembly candidates will join their colleagues across Essex to form part of the 75 members of the Young Essex Assembly.

Determined campaigning by the Youth Council in recent years has seen projects started to build a youth café in the town centre and a new skatepark in the town park.

Reserve youth councillors will have the opportunity to attend all full youth council meetings and participate in training with the elected youth councillors.  They can also be involved with the Cafe Youth Management Group or Harlow YouthBank.
