Benefits - applicable amounts

An applicable amount is a standard national figure which the Government believes reflects the basic living needs of a applicant and their family. The figure is normally updated each November and the new figures are applied from the following April.

A applicant's applicable amount is the same for both Housing Benefit (HB) and Council Tax Support (CTS). It is the total of any personal allowances and premiums which apply in their case.

All applicants have an applicable amount but for those in receipt of JSA(IB), Income Support or guarantee credit, it is not required to calculate their Housing Benefit and or Council Tax Support as they are entitled to maximum amount. However in some circumstances non-dependent deductions will be made.
