Benefits - non-dependants

A non-dependant is someone over the age of 18 who lives in your household on a non-commercial basis i.e. not paying rent to live there. They could be your son, daughter, mother, father, other relatives or friends. If you have a non-dependant living in your home, we normally reduce the amount of benefit and/or support you get; we call this a non-dependant deduction.

The deduction will be taken at source from your Housing Benefit and/or Council Tax support entitlement each week.

How much are the non-dependant deductions?

The Government update the non-dependant deductions every April. The rate of deduction we take from your benefit and/or support depends on each of the non-dependants gross income this includes earnings and any benefits. If your non-dependants are a couple we add their income together to take one deduction. We require proof of income for any non dependants. If we do not receive it, the highest deduction will be taken.

Are the deductions always taken?

Deductions are not taken if the you or your partner are:

  1. In receipt of Attendance Allowance;
  2. In receipt of the care component of Disability Living Allowance;
  3. Registered blind.

If your Housing Benefit is calculated using the Local Housing Allowance the presence of a non-dependant may increase the rate that you are entitled to because they may increase the number of bedrooms that you require. If they move out, your Local Housing Allowance rate may drop to that of a smaller property.
