Battery recycling scheme
Residents are now able to collect containers
for battery recycling from the Civic Centre in
the Town Centre.
Harlow Council, working in partnership with
ECCO, is encouraging those residents living in low-rise
properties to recycle batteries, which are collected
every three months from the kerbside. Residents in
flat blocks can recycle batteries by taking them to
the ECCO shop situated in Little Walk in the Town Centre.
Kathy May, Street Scene and Waste Strategy
Manager said: "The battery recycling scheme fits in
with Harlow Council's wider reduce, re-use and
recycle plans, to help divert waste from rapidly
diminishing landfill sites. The average household uses 21 batteries
a year - when you multiply that by the number of households in
Harlow, you're talking over half-a-million
batteries every year. Rather than dumping vast numbers of
batteries in the ground, to wreak environmental damage,
they can be recycled to extract metals and other
re-useable materials."
