Celebrate Harlow opens doors with a series of free family events

A total of 11 buildings and places of interest across Harlow are opening their doors for a series of family-friendly events between September 11-19.

All events are free and form part of Celebrate Harlow Open Doors Week, encouraging residents to visit new locations or to view them in a different light.

 

On September 11, visitors can conduct City of London Sinfonia musicians and take part in a sheep sculpting workshop at the Gibberd Gallery, while Harlow Council’s main chamber will host exhibiting community groups and a debate over youth provision. On the same day, the newly-opened Gatehouse Arts Studios & Gallery launches with an open studios event.

 

St John’s Arts and Recreation Centre is holding two exhibitions on the 11th and 12th, while on the 12th visitors can learn about the history of Harlowbury Chapel, Harlow’s oldest building.

 

Harlow Playhouse hosts a series of family events on the 12th, including live music, free workshops and 2 free main stage performances, as well as the chance to get a glimpse behind the scenes.

 

Science Alive unlocks its doors on the 15th with exhibitions, presentations and activities, while young and old can walk out onto Harlow Town Football Club’s pitch on the 16th and take part in a penalty shoot-out.

 

On the 18th, visitors can enjoy an afternoon of rock and acoustic performances by Harlow Rock School at The Museum of Harlow, or take in the beauty of the world-renowned Gibberd Garden.

 

Finally on the 19th there is the chance to look behind the doors of Harlow Masonic Lodge and learn about its craft and regalia.

 

Councillor Joel Charles, Executive Committee Member and Chairman of Harlow Council’s Community & Citizenship Policy Working Group, said: “Harlow Council is delighted to be taking part in this new initiative, encouraging people to come along and see some of the buildings and venues that Harlow has to offer.”

 

A Celebrate Harlow spokesperson added: “Open Doors events take place up and down the UK every September, we’re delighted to be able to expand Harlow’s programme of free events over nine days.

 

“We’re confident that there’s something for everyone in the mix and look forward to residents taking the opportunity to see something different.”

 

 

The Gibberd Gallery

Saturday 11 September, 10.30am-5pm

Enjoy Henry Moore’s celebrated Sheep exhibition and join in with one of the following:

Minute Maestro(10.30am-1.00pm) - Become a musical maestro and conduct City of London Sinfonia musicians, doodle a picture and have it turned into music, and take part in arts and crafts.

Sculpting Sheep (2.00pm-5.00pm) - Drop-in sheep sculpting workshop run by The Henry Moore Foundation. Suitable for all ages (children must bring an adult)

The Council Chamber

Saturday 11 September, 10.30am-5pm

See Harlow’s Council Chamber in action and meet a wide range of exhibiting community groups, to include:

Councillor Debate (12.00pm-2.00pm) - 3 Harlow Councillors and 3 Youth Councillors debate the Harlow strategy for youth provision.

Gatehouse Arts Studios & Gallery

Saturday 11 September, 11am-6pm

Harlow’s newest Arts Studios and Gallery launches with an exhibition and open studios.

Historical exhibition on Old Harlow and St John’s, and a special exhibition of historical toys. Refreshments available.

View Harlow’s oldest building, located within the grounds of Harlowbury Manor, and learn about its past and loving restoration. An exhibition of local artists’ work also takes place. Refreshments available.

An afternoon of fun-packed family-friendly activities with exhibits, live music, and free activities. To include:

OpenGarden - Enjoy the world renowned Gibberd Garden for free, with glades, pools and lawns providing a setting for some 80 sculptures, architectural features, and a children’s moated castle! Refreshments available.

Saturday 18 September, 1pm-4pm
