Harlow Council waste booklet gets award nomination
A booklet which prompted a huge increase in
kerbside recycling in Harlow has been short-listed for a
prestigious design award.
The publication, which was produced by Harlow
Council as part of its “Together We Can Love Our Waste” initiative,
was sent to every household in the town at the end of 2007.
It has been short-listed in the Good
Communications Awards Print Innovation category, which aims to
recognise and reward design excellence in the public sector.
Other entries being considered for the honour
come from Westminster, Aylesbury and Salford Councils and the
Maritime and Coastguard Agency. The winner will be announced at a
ceremony in London on June 26th.
The 36-page booklet, which was distributed to
all households in Harlow during November and December last year,
was designed in-house by Harlow Council’s Communications team,
following a brief from the Waste and Recycling Department.
The cover featured a nightmare image of young
children strolling hand in hand on a festering mountain of rubbish
and was designed to shock people into taking a more active role in
recycling waste.
It was packed with useful information on how,
when and where to recycle different kinds of rubbish and the
pull-out centre pages included an integral magnet so people could
keep a list of key dates stuck to their fridge.
The amount of kerbside recycling collected in
January 2008, in the wake of the booklet’s distribution, was a
substantial 596.84 tonnes - an increase of over 87 tonnes (17%)
compared to the same period last year.
The Leader of Harlow Council, Councillor
Andrew Johnson, said: “I am delighted that the booklet has received
the accolade of being short-listed for a coveted design award.
“It’s a tribute to the creativity of the
Council officers involved, who turned what could have been an
ordinary booklet into something that’s both eye-catching and
useful.”
A limited number of copies of the booklet,
which contains key dates for waste and recycling collections up to
October this year, are still available on request. For a copy,
