Council Budget 2007-8
Residents can expect an increase of just 1.9%
(8p a week on a Band C property) in Harlow Council’s share of their
council tax bill if budget proposals are given the go ahead.
Harlow councillors are to discuss the budget
at Full Council this Thursday (15 February) after the Council’s
Policy & Resources Committee last Thursday (8 February), agreed
to recommend the proposals.
The budget proposals in the report put more
money into the Council’s priority areas like increasing recycling,
promoting environmental initiatives as well as celebrating the
60th anniversary and improving Harlow’s image.
Efficiency savings in line with Government requirements are
proposed along with savings coming from the forming of a new
company – Kier Harlow Limited – to deliver housing repairs and
environment services for local people.
Local people’s council tax is collected by
Harlow Council but on the bill people are also paying for services
from Essex County Council, Essex Police and Essex Fire Service as
well as the Council. It is proposed that Essex County Council’s
share of the bill will increase by 4.5% with Essex Police going up
by 4.9% and the fire authority’s share increasing by 2.9%. These
increases are expected to be agreed by 14 February.
According to the Local Government Association
(Press Release “Real terms” council tax freeze comes at a price, 22
January) the average proposed District councils tax rise, is set to
be 3.1%.
