Council rewards healthy eating
More than 45 local catering
establishments, which offer their customers healthy eating options,
were recognised on Friday (27 June) when Harlow Council handed
out Essex Healthy Life, Healthy Eating Awards at the Civic
Centre.
Forty-six premises were presented with
awards after meeting criteria set by the Essex Food Liaison
Group and the Chartered Institute of Environmental
Health. Healthy Eating is being promoted by many councils and
Harlow Council aims to take steps to reduce growing local and
national trends for tackling obesity.
Harlow Council’s Chairman Tony Hall,
who presented the awards, said: “Poor diet and obesity has
become very common across the country. It causes major health
problems, reduces life expectancy, impacts on the economy and can
prevent people from enjoying some aspects of their
lives. Award schemes like this one encourage and enable people
at a local level to improve their diet, and consequently their
health. The successful premises had tough criteria to meet and I
congratulate them all on their achievements. These premises are at
the forefront of producing healthy food choices to their
customers.”
All the premises have to meet a good
level of Food Hygiene regulated by Environmental Health and the
following criteria:
- If chips or fried rice are served, an
alternative starchy food such as pasta, boiled rice or mashed,
boiled or baked potatoes without added fat must always be
available.
- Frying must be replaced by lower fat cooking
methods wherever it is possible.
- Unsaturated oils and fats must be used in
food preparation and cooking wherever it is possible.
- Reduced fat milk must be offered for
beverages and must always be used in cooking wherever it is
possible.
- At least one choice of fresh fruit AND
vegetables must always be readily available.
In addition the GOLD award
requires commitment to:
- Making sure that at least 50% of the food you serve is clearly
described as ‘healthy eating’.
- Meeting a series of specific requirements, under the above
headings, such as removing fat from meat. These requirements are
listed in the Self Assessment Questionnaire that you will receive
together with additional guidance once you register.
- Having an appropriate sales promotion and marketing strategy,
which works alongside the general principles of the ‘Healthy
Eating’ Award and supports healthier eating.
