Consultation begins on future decision-making

Residents, businesses and local organisations can now have their say on how Harlow Council could make decisions in the future.

Harlow Council is consulting on whether it should move to an executive style of decision making e.g. a directly elected Mayor and Cabinet, Leader and Cabinet or retain the current Committee system.

The Council has already streamlined its policy decision-making by creating a new Executive Committee to replace three former Policy Committees. This structure was adopted on the basis that consultation would be undertaken on a possible change for Harlow Council away from a Committee based decision-making structure to executive arrangements.

Executive Consultation, Harlow Council, Civic Centre, The Water Gardens, Harlow CM20 1WG.

The consultation starts this week and runs to Friday 1 October 2010.

In September a consultation leaflet will be sent to all households with Harlow Times, the Council’s residents’ magazine. The leaflet will also be emailed to local businesses and copies sent to a wide range of local organisations. Public meetings will also be held.

Councillor Andrew Johnson, Leader of the Council, said: “This is an opportunity for residents, businesses and organisations to let us know how they think the Council should make decisions in future.

"Starting this week people can have their say on-line or by post and we will also be holding public meetings where people can tell us their views in person during the consultation period.“

Following the consultation a report on the findings will go to the December 2010 Full Council meeting when a decision will be made on the way forward.
