Harlow Celebrates 60 Years
8 January 2007
Harlow will be celebrating its 60th
anniversary during 2007 and the Council is inviting local
organisations to help make it a party to remember.
Events will kick off in late March, the month
that Harlow was officially designated a new town in 1947. Plans for
council organised celebrations include a Mad Hatter’s tea party for
children in the town, a food and cookery festival at Harlow Museum
and a special themed town show and fireworks event.
The Council is also inviting other
organisations and the local community to join the programme of
activities with events of their own. The town’s Civic Society is
organising a conference during March and the town will also be host
to guests from across Europe when it hosts the New Towns Assembly
in June.
To find out more, community groups are being
invited to a stakeholder conference at the Civic Centre on the
17th January where Council Chairman Cllr Gregory Peck
will be outlining how they can get involved.
Joint Leader Cllr Tony Durcan said: “The
60th anniversary celebrations will be about looking
forward as well as looking at the past. We will be aiming to run
many events for children who will be the next generation of our
community. We are hoping that many groups and individuals
will want to participate.”
Joint Leader Cllr Chris Millington said: “The
Harlow community has developed and changed over the years and we
hope that the celebrations will reflect this. Over the coming weeks
we will be looking at how we can support organisations with their
events.”
Groups that are interested in finding out more
can attend the stakeholder conference at the Civic Centre on
17th January 4-6pm. Places must be booked in advance by
contacting Communications on 01279 446274.
