Harlow in Bloom
Spring blooms are bringing a blaze of colour
to Harlow following a Council-funded initiative to brighten up some
of the town’s main thoroughfares and green spaces with an extensive
programme of bulb planting.
The bulbs were planted last autumn by Kier
Harlow’s Environment Task Force Team to provide seasonal colour
throughout the spring and summer.
Among the areas that have been cultivated are
north verges along Second Avenue opposite Netteswell Plantation,
the roundabout near St Mark’s School and the south verge leading to
Netteswell Pond.
Joint Council Leader, Councillor Tony Durcan,
said: “The bulbs look absolutely stunning and we have already had
some approving letters from local residents saying what a
delightful difference they make.”
The spring blooms will be joined in the coming
weeks with later flowering bulbs and then in the summer by
wildflowers including Red Clover, Meadow Buttercup, Yarrow, Field
Scabious, Red Champion and Black Medick.
The new wildflower areas will provide a haven
for wildlife, including bees and butterflies and will encourage
colonies of Bee Orchids to re-establish.
Joint Council Leader, Councillor Chris
Millington, said: “Spring has well and truly sprung in Harlow and
we can look forward to a magnificent display of colour throughout
the year.”
