Harlow Council will be raising a special flag at its Civic
Centre on 22 June in recognition of the work of Britain’s armed
forces.
Harlow will be joining hundreds of other
councils and organisations around the UK in raising a flag to mark
the start of programme of activities culminating in National Armed
Forces Day on 27th June.
The national event, the first of its kind, has
been organised as a celebration and mark of respect to the work of
the UK’s services past, future and present. A specially designed
flag is based on the Union Jack and ceremonies will also be
organised in countries where British troops are serving including
Afghanistan, Iraq, Cyprus and the Falkland Islands.
The Ministry of Defence is also encouraging
members of the public to send messages of support through its
website and to use a range of web tools such as wallpapers and
backgrounds on their Twitter accounts and websites.
The ceremony in Harlow will be led by Council
Chairman Cllr Edna Stevens who will make a short speech followed by
the flag raising.
Cllr Stevens said: “We are pleased to be
supporting this special event reminding us of how important our
armed forces are to this country and to the people that they
protect across the world. I would encourage people to come and add
their support to our own ceremony on the 22nd June but also to
visit the Ministry of Defence website to see how they can make
their own contribution of remembrance and thanks.”
The ceremony will take place at the Civic
Centre at 11am on 22 June and members of the public are welcome to
attend. The Ministry of Defence website is at http://www.mod.uk/.
