Open 08
An exhibition of work by Harlow
artists at the Gibberd Gallery
Saturday 31st May – Saturday 28th June
2008
The Open is Harlow Council Gibberd
Gallery’s annual exhibition of paintings, drawings, prints and
sculpture by local artists.
An open exhibition is a
regular feature in the diaries of galleries across the country, the
most famous being the Summer Exhibition at the Royal Academy. As
with other open exhibitions the Gibberd Gallery receives more work
than it is possible to display and so a panel of judges are invited
to make a selection. The judges are given no criteria other than to
select the works that appeal to them the most, and this display
represents their tastes and interests. To make things fair the
judges are changed every year. This year’s panel consisted of
an artist, the Chairman of Harlow Council, Chair of the Harlow Art
Trust and a representative from GSK, our gallery sponsors.
In the spirit of an open competition,
submissions are received from both professional artists and people
who paint and sculpt for enjoyment. This year over 140 pieces were
submitted and around 50 were selected for final display. The
standard of work was extremely high, making the selection process
very challenging. All involved in the selection process and setting
up were amazed by the number and quality of works submitted by
Harlow artists. This annual exhibition is a fantastic opportunity
for Harlow residents to see the talents within the community. Many
of the works exhibited are for sale.
