Town Park Sculpture Vandalised
A sculpture from Harlow’s collection has
recently been vandalised beyond repair and is set to be removed
from its position with the Town Park.
Aphrodite
by Ernest Adsetts is owned by the Harlow Art Trust and has sat in a
quiet location with the Town Park since it was donated to the Trust
in 1957.
The extent of the damage will prevent the work
from being repaired; vandals have removed the head and arms as well
as destroying the torso.
Jenny Lushington, Friends of Harlow Sculpture
Collection, said: “The Friends of Harlow’s Sculpture Collection are
shocked that this mindless vandalism has ruined another of our
lovely sculptures. The complete destruction of Aphrodite is so
similar to that inflicted on another of our Town Park sculptures –
Children on a Rock – last summer.
"The sculpture has given joy to everyone visiting the park for
more that 50 years – whole generations of Harlow residents have
looked across the water to spot Aphrodite looking out at them – now
she has gone!”
.
It is hoped the insurance claim for the work
will be put towards a new sculpture for Harlow.
