Pets' Corner refurbishment update April 2015
Work is well under way to regenerate Harlow Town Park including the refurbishment of Pets’ Corner. Since its closure in February 2015, Pets’ Corner has seen essential works carried out by the staff and volunteers in preparation for the contractors to start construction as part of its £2.8m refurbishment. This involved clearing out storage and maintenance areas and moving these items to another site adjacent to Pets’ Corner.
Work has now started on a new path, which is being installed through the current sheep paddock, to give the sense of feeling of walking through the field; this will lead to a new entry point.
The aviaries located at the top of Pets’ Corner by the aquarium have been dismantled to allow drainage works to begin. The birds have been safely housed in another aviary until a new aviary is built for them towards the end of the project. The aquarium is being painted and new vivarium tanks are to be installed soon to give the reptiles housed there larger accommodation.
The next step is to install services; this will involve most of the walkways being dug up to enable new drainage and water supplies to be laid.
Once completed, the new-look Pets’ Corner will include a new events barn and Learning Centre to provide an enhanced education programme, as well as improved visitor access and better facilities for the animals.
Whilst the main buildings are not open to the public at the moment, Pets’ Corner continues to put on activities to allow the public access to enjoy the animals as much as possible. Many of the animals are out in the paddocks on the Showground each day and Pets’ Corner staff and volunteers are running activities, such as bottle feeding the lambs and petting activities in the paddocks, during the school holidays (dependent on weather).
Pets’ Corner’s animals continue to attend community events and activities such as educational visits to schools and therapeutic sessions in health and social care centres, as well as other community events.

Whilst the building works are taking place arrangements have been made to ensure that all the animals are suitably rehoused or cared and staff will continue to work during the closure to feed and exercise the animals. More information on Town Park restoration
