Indices of Deprivation
The Indices of Deprivation study is designed to help us understand which areas of England are most affected by deprivation. The study details information about a range of deprivation issues. From this information, we are able to see the connections and relationships between deprivation issues; for example, levels of high unemployment and low skills being linked to higher levels of crime in certain areas.
The Office for National Statistics (ONS) carries out a national Census every ten years to find out more about the people who live in England and Wales and about the make-up of local neighbourhoods. The 2011 Census took place on 27 March 2011, with questionnaires being sent out to around 25 million households. The questionnaire asked about work, health, national identity, citizenship, ethnic background, education, second homes, language, religion, voluntary work, marital status and so on. These statistics are used to build a picture of today's society.
