Direct Debit

Paying the Council by Direct Debit

Direct Debit is the cheapest and most convenient method of paying the Council. The advantages and safeguards of paying by Direct Debit are:

  • Payment dates are not overlooked
  • No need to write out cheques
  • No unnecessary trips to the Post Office, bank or elsewhere
  • Budgeting and cash flow can be planned effectively
  • No need to complete a new instruction or cancel each year
  • If an error does occur, you will be reimbursed immediately and without question by your bank
  • Any variations to amounts and/or payment dates will be notified in advance, allowing time for you to respond;

Please note: no discount can be given for simply paying by Direct Debit, as the cost of offering a incentive to those paying by this method is prohibitive.

The Direct Debit Guarantee

  • This Guarantee is offered by all banks and building societies that accept instructions to pay Direct Debits
  • If there are any changes to the amount, date or frequency of your Direct Debit, Harlow Council will notify you 10 working days in advance of your account being debited or as otherwise agreed. • If an error is made in the payment of your Direct Debit, by Harlow Council or your bank or building society, you are entitled to a full and immediate refund of the amount paid from your bank or building society
  • If you receive a refund you are not entitled to, you must pay it back when Harlow Council asks you to
  • You can cancel a Direct Debit at any time by simply contacting your bank or building society. Written confirmation may be required. Please also notify Contact Harlow.
