Harlow town centre will see an increase of officers dedicated to policing the town centre from today, Monday, 22 July.
The new officers will be known as the Town Centre Team and will work closely with the Community Policing Team in order to share intelligence and contacts, as well as to develop a joint approach to local issues.
The team will focus on issues that impact the community the most and being visible in their patrols and engagement across Harlow. The Town Centre Team will continue to work towards reducing anti-social behaviour and drugs offences, including the use and supply of drugs, in known hotspots across the town centre.
The officers will work closely with partners to get to the root of the issues in the town centre, including Harlow Council’s Community Safety Team, local businesses, The Water Gardens, and the Harvey Centre. They will also be keen to hear from residents and community leaders about the issues on their doorstep.
Essex Police’s investment in more policing in town centres will place officers in 23 locations across the county to deal with the issues on your doorstep.
Inspector Tony Walker, of Harlow’s Community Policing Team, said: “It’s an incredibly exciting time for Harlow and I’m looking forward to helping lead the new Town Centre Team.
“These officers will continue with the good work that’s gone before them and keeping putting the pressure on reducing crime across the town. The team will have a really visible presence and I know they’re looking forward to making those all-important relationships with residents, partners and business-owners to ensure that Harlow town centre is a safer place to live, work and enjoy.”
Councillor Eugenie Harvey, Harlow Council’s portfolio holder for Community and Wellbeing, said: “This is welcome news for Harlow town centre and will strengthen the already solid partnership work we do with Essex Police.
“We know our residents are concerned about safety in the town centre and this measure is a response to that. Our Community Safety Officers will be working closely with the new Town Centre Team providing a dedicated visible presence in our town centre.
“This will help ensure that shoppers and businesses of Harlow town centre can go about their business in safety. The teams will respond to local issues including enforcing the new Public Space Protection Orders, which will target antisocial cycling, drinking of alcohol in public and ball games that negatively affect the town centre.”
