Antisocial behaviour in The Stow falls by 38% over past year

Antisocial behaviour (ASB) in The Stow has fallen by 38% over the past year following the successful implementation of the joint ‘Clear, Hold, Build’ initiative led by Harlow Council and Essex Police.

The initiative has focused on working closely with local residents, businesses, and community groups to target crime and ASB in The Stow, which previously recorded the highest levels of incidents in the town.

High-visibility patrols, improved CCTV and additional security measures have resulted over the past year in ASB falling by 38%.

The council has supported the initiative through improvements to housing, public spaces, and community facilities, while continuing to deliver events and engagement activities to bring residents together and enhance neighbourhood safety.

The Safe to Go Stow Community Hub will remain open for another year, as more major improvements are scheduled for the neighbourhood centre and its surrounding areas. The next phase of the programme will also focus on empowering residents and local groups to lead change, ensuring that improvements in safety, community cohesion, and the public realm are long-lasting and sustainable.

Commenting on the reduction in reported cases of ASB in The Stow, Councillor Joel Charles, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Public Protection, said:

“The Stow is not a place where ASB can go on unchecked. Members of the council’s community safety team, neighbourhood police officers, local business leaders and committed residents have all worked together to confront several issues that have impacted The Stow for some time.

“Although the 38% reduction in reported ASB cases is positive news, there is still more work to do. The priority now is to build an even greater sense of community in The Stow. A Christmas tree will be installed again in the main pedestrianised area to celebrate the festive season, and details about an outdoor urban themed art project will be announced soon.

“The steps taken to improve community safety in The Stow are working. It is the council’s intention to apply the insights gained from the targeted work in The Stow to reduce reported incidents of ASB in other parts of the town.”
