Construction set to start on transformation of Bus Station and Terminus Street

The next chapter in Harlow’s town centre regeneration begins this month, as major construction work starts on the complete transformation of Terminus Street and the Bus Station – a flagship project in Harlow Council’s mission to ‘rebuild our town’.

Delivered by The Hill Group and funded through the Government’s £23.7 million Towns Fund, the new transport hub will radically reshape the area into a vibrant, accessible and modern gateway to the regenerated town centre – creating a seamless connection between public transport, walking and cycling, and the wider town.

The hub and interchange will transform the area into a bright and welcoming space, providing public transport for Harlow's residents, visitors and employees, as well as connecting with the Harlow and Gilston Garden Town sustainable transport corridor.

Some demolition work has already taken place at the site, with the removal of the old information point and toilets, as well as Terminus Street bridge – however, the main construction is now set to begin.

Starting this month, the transformational works include:

  • A brand-new transport hub with a canopy-covered waiting area and green space
  • A modern cycle hub for up to 80 bikes
  • A redesigned bus station and Terminus Street, with a new bus exit to Crown Gate
  • A vibrant new streetscape that will make the area feel safer, cleaner, and more welcoming

This is just one of several major regeneration schemes launching across the town centre – with construction also beginning soon in Market Square, the Playhouse Quarter, and Broad Walk. Together, these projects represent the most significant town centre redevelopment since Harlow’s founding. This transport interchange will not only serve Harlow residents but also boost accessibility, footfall and confidence in the town centre – helping attract new businesses, cultural venues, and investment.

Councillor Dan Swords, Leader of Harlow Council, said:

"With the main works on this scheme set to start this month, we really are gathering some momentum and motoring ahead as we rebuild our town.

“This is a hugely exciting moment for Harlow. The start of construction at Terminus Street and the bus station marks the next major step in our plan to comprehensively rebuild the town centre as part of our plan to Build Harlow’s Future.

“After years of decline, regeneration is now becoming real. Residents and visitors will see change in action – not just plans on paper. And with Market Square, Playhouse Quarter, and Broad Walk also set to begin construction, we are motoring ahead to deliver the new town centre Harlow deserves.”
