Construction moving at pace on transformation of Adams House

Construction work is moving at pace on the transformation of Adams House, as Harlow Council turns the landmark building into a major new food and leisure destination at the heart of the town centre.

The entire ground floor is being transformed into a vibrant market-hall style venue, with a bar and multiple food operators offering everything from morning coffees and family meals to evening drinks and live entertainment.

Outdoor seating will spill into the transformed Market Square, creating a destination designed to be busy from morning into night and bring new life and footfall back into the heart of Harlow.

The transformation goes far beyond the ground floor. The building’s iconic clockface – beneath which generations of Harlow residents remember meeting – is being restored, while a new roof, windows and insulation will significantly improve the homes above.

It is all happening alongside the complete transformation of Market Square itself.

Buildings around the square and the public space between them are being reinvented to create a lively new social hub for Harlow, bringing together restaurants, bars, markets, high-quality offices, events and nightlife.

Councillor Dan Swords, Leader of Harlow Council, said:

“Adams House is being transformed before our eyes and construction is moving at real pace.

“We are taking a building that stood neglected for far too long and turning it into a flagship destination – somewhere you can grab a coffee in the morning, enjoy food with the family, meet friends for a drink or enjoy live entertainment in the evening.

“And we’re bringing back a piece of Harlow history too. Generations remember meeting beneath the Market Square clock. We’re restoring it as part of a transformation that celebrates our heritage while creating something completely new for Harlow’s future.

“Together with the new Market Square, this will create a vibrant new heart for our town centre – full of people, businesses, food, markets, events and life from morning into night.

“This is the change we promised, and residents can now see it happening before their eyes.”

The project is part of Harlow Council’s wider Building Harlow’s Future programme, with major regeneration underway across the town centre – from Market Square and Broad Walk to Terminus Street, the Harvey Centre, West Gate and the Playhouse Quarter.
