Demolition and clearance of old bandstand begins

Work has started today (2 October 2025) to demolish the remains of the bandstand in Harlow Town Park, marking the first step in Harlow Council’s 8-stage plan to rebuild the iconic venue.

The demolition and clearance of the site follows the fire which destroyed the bandstand last month. The site has been made safe and secure in recent weeks and is now being cleared so work to rebuild can move forward.

The steps to rebuilding the bandstand – with step one now underway – are:

  1. Clear and secure the site – The area will be made safe and cleared, with protective hoardings installed. These will feature historic photos of the bandstand in its heyday, celebrating its legacy while work takes place.
  2. Appoint an architect – A specialist architect will be chosen to design a new bandstand that honours its heritage and iconic look; while ensuring it is modern, accessible, and capable of hosting major events and concerts.
  3. Involve the community – Residents will be invited to share their ideas, memories, and suggestions to help shape the design and ensure the new bandstand reflects the heart of Harlow.
  4. Appoint a contractor – A contractor will be selected to carry out the rebuild, working closely with the council and architect to deliver the project.
  5. Design the new bandstand – Working with the architect, contractor, and community feedback, detailed designs will be drawn up to balance heritage with modern needs.
  6. Secure planning permission – The necessary planning applications will be submitted and approved to allow work to begin.
  7. Rebuild the bandstand – Construction will begin on the new bandstand, restoring a landmark that will once again be a focal point for music and community life.
  8. Celebrate the reopening – Once complete, the bandstand will be unveiled with a special launch event to mark its return and new chapter in Harlow’s history.

Commenting on the progress, Councillor Dan Swords, Leader of Harlow Council said:

“The fire at the bandstand was a tragic moment for our town, but today we begin a new chapter. The demolition marks the start of our clear plan to rebuild this landmark – not just as it was, but even better, as a place that will once again be the beating heart of music and community life in Harlow.

“This is about more than rebuilding a structure. It is about restoring a place that belongs to the people of Harlow – a place that has created cherished memories for generations and will do so again for generations to come. We are moving at pace and with purpose, and we will keep our community involved at every step of the journey.

“When the bandstand is rebuilt, residents can look forward to the return of major events and concerts from next summer, creating new memories and bringing our town together once more.”

To show that the spirit of music and community will never be lost in Harlow, a special “See You Soon” music event will take place on Sunday 19 October 2025 from 1pm-7pm outside the bandstand. The event will feature local bands and musicians, celebrating the town’s musical talent and bringing people together as we look ahead to the bandstand’s return. The event will be free to attend.
