Harlow Council has today announced a major new support package for the town’s black cab trade – backing local drivers as the town centre is rebuilt and preparing the trade to thrive in the new Harlow.
The package recognises the safe, reliable and high-quality service provided by Harlow’s licensed Hackney carriage drivers, while supporting them through disruption caused by major regeneration works.
The council will provide financial support, including grants and a period of free licensing, alongside investment in new taxi infrastructure.
This will include new and improved ranks across Harlow, with a dedicated main black cab rank at the new Bus Station.
As the council rebuilds the town centre – bringing new restaurants, bars, entertainment, events and nightlife – it wants Harlow’s black cabs at the heart of a busier town from morning until night.
Announcing the support package, Councillor Dan Swords, Leader of Harlow Council, said:
“Our black cab drivers provide an incredibly important service to Harlow – offering residents a safe, professional and high-quality way to get around our town.
“As we rebuild the town centre, we know construction creates disruption. That is why we’re backing our drivers now with financial support, while building the new ranks and infrastructure they need to thrive in the future.
“We’re creating a busier, more vibrant Harlow from morning until night – and that means huge opportunities for our taxi trade.
“A thriving town needs a thriving taxi trade. We’re backing ours and putting black cabs at the heart of the new Harlow as we Build Harlow’s Future.”
