Work is set to begin on the multimillion-pound regeneration of Broad Walk as part of Harlow Council’s priorities to rebuild our town and restore pride in Harlow.
Contractors Conamar Building Services have been appointed to carry out the works, which will see the complete transformation of the high street and provide high-quality public spaces. The project will include:
- A comprehensive repaving of Broad Walk, East Walk and Harvey Centre Approach.
- Much-needed green landscaping, including sustainable drainage.
- Brand new and upgraded street furniture, including seating, lighting, bins and CCTV.
- Improving the areas around the Obelisk, Trigon and Vertex sculptures.
- Improved spaces and creation of a central pop-up and event space.
The works are being delivered as part of Harlow’s £23.7m Towns Fund programme and is all part of regenerating the town centre and linking to the works to transform Terminus Street, the new bus station and the plans released last week to transform Market Square.
Conamar will be on site in the coming weeks to start work on the project, which will take around 12 months. Access to shops and businesses in the area will be maintained throughout construction, although there will be some disruption to how people access Broad Walk.
Councillors Dan Swords, Leader of Harlow Council, and Michael Hardware, cabinet portfolio holder for economic development, met with representatives from Conamar this week to signal the start of the project.
Councillor Hardware said:
“This project marks the beginning of the delivery phase in our plans to regenerate Harlow town centre. The area has been neglected for too long and these works will transform the look of Broad Walk with green landscaping and new street furniture to create a brighter, more welcoming town centre for shoppers, visitors and potential investors.
“And this is just the start. With the redevelopment plans for Market Square currently under consultation and works set to begin imminently on the transformation of the bus station, as well as the new arts and cultural quarter on the way, these are very exciting times which will usher in a new era for the town centre.”
