New Harlow Bandstand nears roof height as rebuild on track

Harlow Council has announced that construction of the new Town Park bandstand is progressing rapidly, with the structure now nearing roof height and remaining on schedule ahead of its opening event on Saturday 4th July.

The rebuild follows the devastating fire which destroyed the original bandstand last September. The morning after the fire, the Leader of the Council, Cllr Dan Swords, promised to rebuild a bigger, better bandstand ready to host major events this summer. After full planning permission was granted earlier this year, construction work began immediately and significant progress has already been made on site.

Designed to honour the much-loved original structure while embracing the pioneering spirit of Harlow New Town, the rebuilt bandstand combines heritage with modern innovation. The fully symmetrical design has been developed alongside residents, performers and community groups to ensure it both preserves the site’s historic significance and meets the needs of a modern events venue.

Built using low-carbon materials including contemporary steel and stone, the project also incorporates salvaged bricks from the original bandstand, creating a physical connection between Harlow’s past and future. Once complete, the venue will feature a significantly larger, step-free performance space, upgraded acoustics and audiovisual equipment, dedicated backstage facilities, enhanced security measures and improved landscaping, including a living green roof.

Commenting on the progress, Councillor Dan Swords, Leader of Harlow Council, said:

“The morning after the devastating fire last September, I made a promise to the people of Harlow: that we would rebuild our bandstand bigger, better and ready to host major events once again this summer. Today, seeing the new structure nearing roof height, it is clear that we are delivering on that promise.

“This is a proud moment for our town. The new bandstand will once again become the beating heart of Town Park - a landmark venue where residents, families and visitors can come together for music, celebration and community events for generations to come.

“On Saturday 4 July, Harlow will celebrate the reopening in spectacular fashion as the world-renowned Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra performs a special Last Night of the Proms-style concert, completely free for residents to attend. It will mark the beginning of an incredible summer of events, culminating in the return of the Town Show.

“This summer will showcase the very best of Harlow: pride in our town, confidence in our future and thousands of people coming together to celebrate our community. This project shows once again that we are not just making promises - we are delivering them and Building Harlow’s Future.”

The council will continue to provide updates as construction progresses towards completion later this year.
