Vary a premises licence
Full variation
To apply for a full variation of a premises licence, you need to:
- complete the full variation of a premises licence application form (pdf)
- send the application form to the Licensing team
- provide a plan of the premises (if there is a change to the layout of the premises)
- pay the fee (based on the rateable value of the property)
- submit a copy of your licence
You can pay the application fee by calling 01279 446655 (open Monday to Friday from 9am to 4.45pm). Please give them the payment code 19472 2772 and your details, which will include your trading name, premises address and your name. You will be given a payment reference number receipt, please include this with your application.
Once you have made an application, you will need to:
- advertise your application on the outside of the premises using the outside premises public notice form (pdf)
- advertise your application in the local newspaper using the newspaper public notice form (pdf)
- send copies of the application and plan of the premises to the responsible authorities
Once we receive your application, we will:
- acknowledge it within 5 working days
- allow 28 days for representations
Representations can be made against your application. If we receive any representations, we will take the application to a hearing for councillors to consider. We will then notify you of their decision.
If we do not grant your licence, we will not refund your fee, but you can appeal the decision by writing to us. Appeals are made to a magistrates court within 21 days of notice of the decision.
If we do not receive any representations, we will grant the variation.
Minor variation
To apply for a minor variation of a premises licence, you need to:
- complete the minor variation of a premises licence application form (pdf)
- send the application form to the Licensing team
- pay the £89.00 licence fee
- submit a copy of your licence
You can pay the application fee by calling 01279 446655 (open Monday to Friday from 9am to 4.45pm). Please give them the payment code 19472 2772 and your details, which will include your trading name, premises address and your name. You will be given a payment reference number receipt, please include this with your application.
Once you have made an application, you will need to:
- advertise your application on white paper for 10 working days on the outside of the premises using the outside premises public notice form (pdf)
Day one is the first working day after the day we receive your application.
Once we receive your application, we will:
- display a public notice on our website
- consult with responsible authorities, if applicable
- allow 10 working days for representations
Representations can be made against your application.
We must consider any relevant representations received from responsible authorities or any other person within the time limit. However, there is no provision for a hearing (as there is for a full variation or grant application).
There is no right of appeal to a minor variation. If we refuse your application, you can resubmit a revised application through the minor variations process or submit a full variation application.
We will inform you of our decision to grant or reject the variation within 15 working days. If we exceed this, the application is treated as refused and we must return the fee to you. However, if we refuse your application within the 15 days, we will not refund your fee.
Vary the designated premises supervisor
To apply to vary the designated premises supervisor, you need to:
- complete the vary the designated premises supervisor application form (pdf)
- send the application form to the Licensing team
- provide a consent form from the premises supervisor (pdf)
- pay the £23.00 fee
You can pay the application fee by calling 01279 446655 (open Monday to Friday from 9am to 4.45pm). Please give them the payment code 19472 2772 and your details, which will include your trading name, premises address and your name. You will be given a payment reference number receipt, please include this with your application.
Once you have made an application, you will need to:
- send a copy of your application to the local police (see responsible authorities)
Once we receive your application, we will:

- allow 14 days for representations

Transfer a licence
To apply to transfer a licence, you need to:
- complete the 'premises licence transfer application' form on GOV.UK
- send the application form to the Licensing team
- complete the 'licence holder consent to transfer' form on GOV.UK
- pay the £23.00 fee

You will be given a payment reference number receipt, please include this with your application.
Once you have made an application, you will need to:
- send a copy of your application to the local police and Home Office (see responsible authorities)
