Harlow Council is stepping up its efforts to tackle fly-tipping across the town as part of its mission to ‘protect our communities’.
Enforcement action is being taken against those who illegally dump waste, and residents are being urged to stay vigilant and dispose of waste responsibly.
A large fly-tip recently discovered on Fern Hill Lane is now being cleared in partnership with Epping Forest District Council, demonstrating the council’s commitment to collaborative working to keep our shared environment clean and safe.
It’s important for residents to know that they are still responsible for their waste, even if someone else takes it away. If that person isn’t properly licensed and ends up dumping it illegally, it’s the resident who could be fined. So before handing over any rubbish, take a moment to check that the person or company has a valid waste carrier licence; it could save you a lot of trouble.
Councillor Nicky Purse, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Environment, said:
“Fly-tipping is a blight on our neighbourhoods and a threat to our environment.
“I was appalled by the sheer size of the fly-tip on Fern Hill Lane, and I’m pleased to see strong partnership working between Harlow Council and Epping Forest District Council to tackle this issue head-on.
"We are committed to cracking down on this crime and will not hesitate to take enforcement action against offenders. But we also need residents to be vigilant and make sure they don’t get caught out by using unlicensed waste carriers. If someone takes your rubbish and dumps it illegally, you could be the one facing a fine.
“Always check that the person or company you use has a valid waste carrier licence.”
To help residents in disposing of larger items safely and legally, Harlow Council offers a bookable bulky waste collection service. This convenient service ensures that unwanted furniture, white goods, and other large household items are removed properly.
Residents can find out more and book a collection.
By working together with residents and neighbouring councils, Harlow Council is taking strong action to protect communities and keep the town clean.
